OHSUC results
This year for OHSUC, with a little trepidation by some, and not entirely a consensus, the Churchill squad committed to split into two even teams, X and Y. This allowed us to make up two teams with players who worked well together, focusing on talents and skills, with the hope of creating two balanced teams. The tournament had 8 HS teams, with two pools of 4 teams. Churchill X was placed in the B1 position, and the Y team was A2. Saturday pool play gave each team 3 games, with a cross-over round ending the day for those seeded in the 2 and 3 spots after pool play. Each of our teams had it’s own challenges. The X team had it’s biggest challenge from the Sheldon team, who came out strong. Led by two talented seniors, Kevin and Makaya, they certainly had a height and speed advantage over our X team. Our team’s strong handling though, gained the lead early and held it at the end to start the tournament in a 11-8 win at hard cap. The Y team finished it’s pool play with a nail-biting game against Corvallis HS Tribe. Not sure if it was the foot-long subs during the lunch break, the heat of the day, or over confidence, but Churchill started out slow and weak, with drops and poor throws. Tribe capitalized on every turnover, playing very strong and smooth, quickly advancing to a 7-1 lead at half. With few subs, our team was growing weary, but just would not give up. With the coaching of Peter Q-B, some big sidelines help from our alumni, and Dylan with his “bottle bangers”, our team completely turned around. Everything started to flow, and some big plays led to one of the sweetest comebacks in Churchill history with a final score of 13-11, Churchill. The wins on Saturday allowed our teams a bye during the cross-over round, and put our teams into the two semi games on Sunday morning, with X playing Sheldon and Y playing Summit HS. Churchill Y again started slowly and Summit took a quick lead, racking up 6 points to Churchill’s first two. But, once again, the team found their groove, and gained ground, with a final score of 12-9 at hard cap. The X team in their re-match with Sheldon was able to finish the game at 13-8. At this point, there was general agreement that Churchill would combine for the final game slot and include some players from Tribe, in a match up against the Churchill alumni. Overall, it was a rewarding weekend for Churchill players, confirming their program’s strength in a year that’s has had some obstacles and some difficulty finding opportunities to play. This is an amazing group of players and alumni, a family that holds together and grows. It’s been a joy to see some new faces included this year, and some new talent emerging, and at the same time the continuing support of our past players. There’s a new year ahead, and plenty of future for this team…

Westerns Update #2
The girls made it to the finals before losing to Northwest, so they finished 2nd. A very good showing for playing with a small traveling squad. The team made it out of Kansas City despite the thunderstorms, and are on their way home.
I’m sure Kathy will have a more complete recap when she gets a chance after returning home.
Westerns First Day
The Churchill Girls were undefeated today through three games of pool play. Going into the tournament as the first seed, they needed to win all to keep their spot at the top. The first game, against Seattle Academy, ended with a score of 10-6. Next up was Cathedral, and we won convincingly with a score or 15-3. The most anticipated game of the day for us was against Northwest School from Seattle, seeded third overall, and second in our pool. This was the first real meeting of these two teams since last year’s Westerns championship game. Our girls came out strong, and continued to fight throughout the game. In the end we triumphed, closing out the game 11-5. It was really a great game, with some great plays on both sides.
In the morning, our first game is our final pool play game with Hopkins from Minnesota. After that, we will play a quarterfinal game, and assuming we win the game with Hopkins, it looks like we will play Alameda. Both Nathan Hale and Cretin Durham, who are B1 and B2 respectively, had a good day today. Unfortunately, as they were preparing to play late this afternoon, the thunderstorms hit, and as far as we know, the game never got played. So, if things go as hoped, we should meet with one of those teams in semis, and who knows from there on… we’ll see if we can make our hopes and aspirations come true.
Westerns Update #1
Everything went well on the trip, and the team spent a relaxing evening at the hotel. The girls won their first two games today. For more frequent and detailed updates, check out Luke’s blog. He is reporting from on the scene.
