OHSUR

img_2975.jpgBoth guys and girls teams came home from the Oregon HS State Tournament with trophies. With only one other participant in the girls division this year, the our girl’s team was able to take the first place spot with their commanding win over Summit. The two teams played a second game for fun, and rounded the day out with some spirit games.

Things were a little more involved for our guys, who were in a field of 5 teams. We knew going in that our biggest challenge would be South, and with a history of two fairly close games this season, Churchill hoped to upset their long-time rivals. But, things did not go as well as hoped in that second game of the day, and Churchill fell with a 11-4 loss. A little bit of a slow start with their next game against Tribe kept things close up till half. Churchill focused on a more controlled handling game in the second half, and extended their lead to a final 10-7 victory. In the end, the Churchill Open team walked away with the second place trophy, and motivation to hang together to claim first in next year’s State tournament.

Congrats to all! Photos are now on-line.

Alumni help advance their teams to Regionals

This weekend there was a whole slew of College Sectionals taking place across the country. With only one more weekend of sectionals left, there are already 6 teams advancing with 7 of our former Churchill High School players.
Whitman – Collin Smith (CHS 07′)
Seeded second overall, Whitman would nearly take the tournament, but a close loss to British Columbia 14-16 would lead to another close loss to Washington 13-15. Though taking two losses they would have rather not taken, Whitman advances to Regionals.

Gonzaga – David Schrieber (CHS 07′)
Originally in the same pool with Collin’s Whitman, Gonzaga upset early on Saturday to make a name for themselves. Unfortunately, an early morning loss to BC 7-15 and then another to Victoria by the same amount put Gonzaga on the ropes. They needed to be perfect for the rest of the day and did so with wins over Whitworth 15-6, Puget Sound 15-7, and then finally 15-9 over Pacific Lutheran.

Oregon State (Womens) – Aubri Bishop (CHS 07′)
Going 2-2 on Saturday gave OSU a first round Sunday morning game against Reed who had nearly beaten OSU the day before (8-9). Sunday would not be much different with another close game against Reed 14-11. They would be beaten badly by Humboldt State 4-15, but not as much the day before and without consequence as the top 4 teams moved on and only Reed would suffer this fate.

Oregon State – Greg Meshnik (CHS 07′) & Daniel Force (CHS 07′)
Outstanding play on Saturday by both Greg and Daniel helped lead OSU to a 5-0 standing and a chance to topple the great Oregon Ego team. Sunday’s finals at 12pm would be all Ego, but the loss still gave OSU a birth to Regionals.

Oregon – Eli Janin (CHS 05′)
Though Jackson Kelsay (CHS 05′) is currently practicing with the Ego team, he is currently ineligible but is working hard to remedy that for next season. Oregon, under the leadership of Dusty Becker (SEHS 04′) rolled their sections as expected with their closest game to OSU in the finals 15-4. Oregon allowed only 11 points all weekend to the 67 they scored…

Pennsylvania – Jay Choi (CHS 07′)
Penn has made a name for itself this year with impressive wins over the likes of Michigan, Pittsburgh, Michigan State, and Harvard. It was no surprise then that they would be seeded one at their section and roll through unmatched. Saturday they would give up only 8 points all day and then Sunday morning roll through Villanova 15-0, Franklin & Marshall 15-1, and then the finals 14-7 over Lehigh.

Only Rebecca Sheridan (CHS 05′) of Carleton College and myself at North Park have Sectional tournaments next weekend to determine our fates. The Carleton ladies are seeded number one and should move on rather easily. We too should advance as there are six spots and we’re currently seeded three. But, nothing is guaranteed.

Papa’s Pizza Update

Thanks to all who participated in the pizza night. We raised $184 with little work. This will go toward our tournament fees for OHSUR to give the benefit to most players.

College Series

Several alumni are playing this weekend in College Sectionals, with hopes to place high enough to advance to regionals, earning them a chance to move on to College Nationals in Boulder!

Oregon/Northern CA Sectionals: Here in Eugene.
OSU Open- Greg and Daniel: Saturday record 5-0. Playing for the second place spot at sectionals, and they do move on to Regionals.
OSU Women- Aubri: Overall record 3 and 3. They secured a spot at Regionals

WA/BC Sectionals: In Burlington
Gonzaga Open- David: 2 and 2 on Saturday, they are playing for 6th place.
Whitman Open- Collin: Saturday results 4-0 (13-8 over Gonzaga, 13-3 over PLU-B and 13-4 over UBC-B, and 15-2 over Puget Sound in quarters). They won the WWU game 15-5, and moved on to play UBC in the finals. They are guaranteed a spot at Regionals.

OOPS – I missed Jay’s sectionals! Jay played last weekend with Penn Open in East Penn Sectionals. They were undefeated, 7-0. First place…very nice! He’s moving on to Regionals.
