Write-Up: Open Game with South – Wed. 3/19

Our open team played South Eugene for the second time this season on Wednesday at Churchill. The sky was overcast and there was a little wind. Churchill pulled to start the game and South started out fast and got out to a 4-1 lead. Then both teams started to get in a rhythm and traded points with the downwind team scoring every time when south took half on a very long point 8-5. After 3 more points of the downwind team scoring, the score was 9-7 South. Churchill got their first 2 breaks of the game to tie it back up at 9. South scored and got a break to make it 11-9. South got a few more breaks in between trading downwind points and got to game point for South 14-11. The kidsports soccer players needed the field and Dylan assured them that it would be “like 3 more minutes.” This careless assumption that South would get a quick win despite Churchill having the wind spurred the Lancers on as they scored 3 quick points to tie it up at 14. After a quick discussion, both teams agreed to make it universe point, in order to free up the fields for the soccer players. Churchill was determined to win this game despite having to pull upwind to South on universe point. Their determination wasn’t enough though as Dylan quickly sprinted deep and caught a huck in the endzone to crush the comeback hopes. He then continued to crush Churchill’s spirit by spiking the disc in a blatant disregard for the “Spirit of the Game.” In the end, it was still a well played and very competitive game among friends….and enemies.

Car Wash – Update

Great day for car washing. The only sunny day in the week! We collected $405 in donations, and it will be credited to each by the amount of hours of work.

Coaching Update – Welcome to Peter

Unfortunately for us, Michael had a change in jobs just after he started coaching for us. This change required him to be at work most afternoons. Michael is still keeping in touch, and hoping to work with the team in the future, but at this point, he is unable to coach consistently.

So, I am now pleased to announce that Peter Qualtere-Burcher will step up to be our coach. Peter graduated last June from Churchill, and knows the team and the history of our program well. He will be a great fit for our team. Please welcome him back into Churchill Ultimate.

O-So-Chill at PLU

plu bbq 08 teamSaturday started early. Due to a 45 minute drive to the fields, we left the church at 7:45 am for a 8:30 captains meeting. Nice fields, cold and cloudy, but it never really rained on us. First game, a 12-2 win for us, was against a combined team of Reed College and University of Portland. A few quick points were traded, to start the game. They scored once more fairly early, and the game went on to end at soft-cap. With a second round bye, some girls decided to travel to the guy’s fields to watch a little of the South or OSU games. With the idea that the fields were about 15 minutes away, it seemed like a good idea for the 6 who piled in the van. However, it was farther than expected, and the stay at the other fields was short. Some good team bonding time in the van, I guess.

As that group was traveling the highways, the rest of us learned that U of O had dropped from the tournament, giving us another empty round. The TD pointed out that the Northwest school team had a third round bye, so a game with them was proposed. They finished a long second round game against UW, and agreed to play a short game to 7 with us after a short break. The rest of our team had just returned, and the game was on. This was an especially fun game for our girls who had been to Jr. Worlds tryouts the weekend prior, since several of the NWS girls had also been to tryouts. We played to 7, taking the game 7-4.

Out last game of the day was against the UW B team, I believe. Some long hucks and great catches led us to a 13-3 victory. We packed up quickly, as the rain clouds were looming.

We headed back to the Open fields for the PLU BBQ…on to showers, ice cream, and back to the church. A long day ended with an early bedtime for most.

Sunday was another early day, as we had agreed to be out of the building by 8. Our wins on Saturday gave us a first round bye, so with some free time, we headed to Shari’s for some good nutrition before the games – stuffed hash browns, cinnamon rolls and muffins!

We got to the field early enough to watch the end of the first round games. We were to play the winner of Reed/UP vs. Linfield College. We were glad that Linfield won, which gave us a different team to play. Quite a few turnovers and a short fascination with hammers created an interesting game, which we won with a score of 15-1. This win put us in semis with PLU, who had just beaten PLU Alum in a close match. A funky bracket, brought the other final team from the winner of Lewis & Clark and NWS, which was Lewis & Clark’s first game of the day. Part way through the game with PLU, we were notified that NWS had won their semi game, but had decided to end their day early. This essentially made our game the final round. It was a hard fought game, definitely the most challenging and exciting of the weekend. Points were traded through out the first half, with wind definitely a factor, but we came out on top at half, 8-7. After half, PLU made a 3 point run, and we just couldn’t get that back. Final score 15-12.

In the end, O-So-Chill ladies (OSU/South/Churchill) had a great time, and it’s so good to be playing again. Thanks to all who made it happen.
